AYURVEDA

Ayurveda, a science based on ancient Indian philosophy, is also called the science of living. Ayurveda is a medical science which helps the human body to keep fit, while providing cures from indigenous plants, (in form of powder, decoction) for the ailments. Ayurveda contains details about body care and drinks which promote health.

  • Abhyangam: Warm oil is applied all over the head and the body and rubbed with hands to ensure equal spreading.

  • Pizhichil: Pizhichil means squeezing. Also known as royal treatment, cotton balls are dipped in warm medicated oil and squeezed onto the body in this process.

  • Sirodhara/ Shirodhara: Medicated fluids-oils, milk or buttermilk are poured on the forehead in a special way. The most common method is used with medicated oils.

  • Thakradhara: Conducting the therapeutic procedure of dhara by using medicated buttermilk.

  • Udvartanam: Massaging in upward direction with increased pressure.

  • Pichu: Keeping a piece of gauze or cotton soaked in medicated oils on the specific parts of body.

  • Kizhi: Kizhi means bundle. This treatment induces perspiration. Bundles are made out of herbal powder, leafs, special variety of rice. Kizhi treatments start with oil application.

  • Navara kizhi: Inducing generalised persiparation by means of medicated puddings is known as pinda sweda. Here Navara rice or sistaka dhanya is used.

  • Podi Kizhi: Fomentation done with a bundle of medicinal powder tied in instead of herbal leaves tied with cotton cloth.

  • Elakizhi: In Elakizhi, herbal leaves are used instead of herbal powders and the procedure is similar to Podikizhi.

  • Avagaha swedana: Performing fomentation in a tub filled with medicated decoctions etc., is known as Avagaha Swedana. After anointing the body with medicated oils, the patient sits in a tub containing lukewarm decoctions up to neck level.

  • Akshi tarpanam: Keeping medicated ghee on the eyeball for a specific period.

  • Karna Purnam: Filling the ears with medicated oil is known as karna puran.

  • Sirovasti: Keeping high quantity of oil on head with a special technique is known as sirovasti.
